DUO

DUO is the two-factor authentication product we use at BYU. In OIT, we also use it to securely authenticate to some of the services we use, including GitHub.

Why do we use DUO?

A year or so ago, several employees’ NET IDs and passwords were compromised. Someone had obtained them without the employee’s knowledge or permission. They logged into their account and redirected their paycheck to be deposited into their bank account rather than the employees, thus stealing their paycheck.

Since then, BYU has implemented two-factor authentication to secure the login process. Today, if an unauthorized person were to get a NET ID and password of an employee or student who has set up two factor authentication and tried to log in, the employee or student would be sent a notification asking them if they authorize the login request. If the request is not approved, the unauthorized person would not be allowed access.

If you haven’t set up DUO authentication yet, go to: https://duo.byu.edu/ to set it up.
